Our History
Brooklyn Community Church (BCC) is a family of believers and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, incorporated in Kings County of the State of New York in September 2010. We held our first worship service on Friday, October 1, 2010, under the leadership of our Founder and Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Frederick Aloysious Lucas, Jr. Since our very beginning, Rev. Maurice Douglas has served as Pastor for Outreach Ministries, and Dr. D. Pulane Lucas has served as our First Lady.
Organizationally, we are an independent, community church, affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA - Metro New York.Headquartered in NYC’s largest borough, our mission is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through the spiritual, intellectual, cultural and social empowerment of individuals, families and communities. On a daily basis, we seek to accomplish this through personal witness and dynamic Holy Spirit-led, Bible-based, out-of-the-box, community-focused, contemporary preaching, teaching and ministries of love and compassion. As a Church Family, we are consistently focused on Evangelism, Discipleship and Stewardship.
We are a tithing church, with an emphasis on the surrender of our testimony, time and talent, and treasure. Our theme is “Behold, I will do a new thing…” (Isaiah 43:19a) and our colors are blue and gold.
We have a congregational form of government consisting of a Senior Pastor, Pastors, Ministers,
Evangelists, Deacons, and Trustees. Ultimate decision-making authority rests in the people or Church
Meeting, under the direction of the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the ordinances of Believer’s Baptism and
the Lord’s Supper, and we dedicate or bless infants and young children. BCC small groups are all
called “ministries,” and we have no “clubs.”
On May 20, 2010, Rev. Dr. Fred Lucas received the divine “green light” and clear heavenly mandate to
“go preach in Brooklyn” and began the work of organizing a new congregation in New York City’s
largest borough. In the summer of 2010, Rev. Fred began convening informal discussions and planning
sessions with supporters and friends at the Brooklyn home of Vonceil Turner.
In September 2010, the group voted to incorporate as the Brooklyn Community Church, Inc.
In elections presided over by Judge L. Priscilla Hall and Judge Lisa Ottley, the following officers were elected:
· Rev. Fred as Founder and Senior Pastor, Rev. Maurice Douglas was elected as Pastor
for Outreach Ministries, Vonceil Turner as Church Treasurer, Lorraine Gamble-Lofton as
Church Clerk, and Howard Lee as Church Attorney.
· Elected as Deacons were Rev. Fred Lucas, Rev. Maurice Douglas, Vonceil Turner, Ellen Edwards, and Howard Lee.
· Initial trustees and incorporators were Rev. Fred Lucas, Ellen Edwards, and Howard Lee.
On Friday, October 1, 2010, the first BCC worship service was held at Berean Baptist Church (at Dr. Hylton L. James Blvd. in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn) where Rev. Dr. Arlee Griffin serves as pastor. The service was the first in a series of “First Friday Fellowship Services” with Dr. Lucas serving as preacher. When the doors of the church were thrust open, a total of eighteen (18) valiant souls walked down the aisle to begin our new venture in Christ.
Let the Church say, Amen!
